In short: a funeral is the service around the time of the death, usually with the coffin present. A memorial happens later, without the coffin. A celebration of life is a less formal gathering focused on remembering the person, and it can stand alone or come after a smaller funeral. All three can be led by a celebrant, and all three can be shaped entirely around the person.
The funeral
This is the service held soon after someone dies, often at a crematorium, church or natural burial ground, with the coffin there. It's the moment of formally saying goodbye. A celebrant-led funeral has no fixed script, so even within that more traditional setting it can be warm, personal and true to the person, with the readings, music and tone you choose.
The memorial
A memorial is held later, sometimes weeks or months after the death, and the coffin isn't present. Families often choose this when the funeral itself was small or private, when people need time, or when loved ones are scattered and need notice to travel. It's a chance to gather properly and remember, without the practical pressures of the days straight after a death.
The celebration of life
A celebration of life is usually the least formal of the three. The focus is squarely on remembering and honouring the person, often with more memories shared, more voices, music, food, and a setting that meant something to them - a pub, a village hall, a garden, a favourite spot. It can be the main event, or it can follow a quiet funeral. The mood is often warmer and more relaxed, though there's still plenty of room for tears alongside the laughter.
Can you have more than one?
Yes, and many families do. A small, private funeral followed by a larger celebration of life a little later is an increasingly popular choice. It takes the pressure off the first few days and gives everyone time to gather for something more considered.
Which is right for your family?
There's no correct answer, only what suits the person and the people who loved them. If you'd find it helpful to talk it through, that's part of what I'm here for. I'll help you understand the options and shape whatever you choose so it feels genuinely theirs.
