What is a Funeral Celebrant?

A funeral celebrant is a trained professional who writes and leads a funeral, memorial or celebration of life that is built entirely around the person who has died. A celebrant-led funeral can be as religious, spiritual or non-religious as you wish, held wherever you choose, and shaped completely by your family's wishes rather than a fixed order of service.

If you have never arranged a funeral before, the word "celebrant" may be new to you. This page explains what a celebrant is, what we do, and how working with one can make a hard week a little gentler.

What a funeral celebrant does

A celebrant's job is to tell your person's story, beautifully and truthfully, and to hold the room with warmth and calm on the day.

In practice, that means I meet with you to learn about the person you have lost: their life, their character, the funny stories and the quiet ones, the people and things they loved. I take all of that away and write a bespoke ceremony, in words that sound like your family and not like a template. You read it, change anything you want, and nothing is final until you are completely happy. Then, on the day, I lead the service with care, so that you and your family are free simply to be there and to grieve.

A good celebrant carries the weight of the day so that you don't have to.

Religious, non-religious, or somewhere in between

One of the biggest misunderstandings about celebrants is that a celebrant funeral has to be non-religious. It doesn't.

Your ceremony can include hymns, prayers and readings if faith was part of your person's life. It can be entirely secular, with no religious content at all. Or it can sit somewhere in the middle, perhaps a favourite hymn alongside a poem and a piece of music that meant everything to them. It is your ceremony, and you decide. I am led by what is true to the person who has died and comforting to the people who loved them.

How a celebrant is different from a minister or a humanist

A member of the clergy leads a funeral within the traditions and words of their faith, which is exactly right for a religious family who want that.

A humanist celebrant leads a funeral that is, by definition, non-religious, with no prayers or hymns.

An independent celebrant, which is what I am, offers the freedom of both. I can include faith where you want it and leave it out where you don't, in any venue you choose, with a ceremony written from scratch for your family. Nothing is off the shelf.

Where a celebrant-led funeral can take place

A celebrant is not tied to a church or a single venue. I can lead a ceremony at a crematorium or cemetery, at a natural burial ground, in a village hall, a garden, a family home, a favourite pub, or anywhere else that holds meaning for you. If it is somewhere your person loved, it is somewhere we can say goodbye to them.

Why families choose a celebrant

Families tell me they want a funeral that actually sounds like the person it is for. They want to recognise them in it. A celebrant-led funeral gives you:

  • A ceremony written entirely around your person, in your family's own words and wishes.
  • The freedom to include, or leave out, any religious content.
  • A choice of venue, music, readings and running order, with no fixed format.
  • Time and space to be honest, to laugh as well as to cry, and to grieve in your own way.
  • Someone to carry the organising and the delivery of the day, so your family can simply be present.

Common questions

Do I need a funeral director to work with a celebrant?

No. Most families come to me through their funeral director, but you are very welcome to contact me directly, and I am happy to work alongside any funeral director you choose.

Can the funeral still be religious?

Yes. Your ceremony can include as much or as little faith as you wish, including hymns, prayers and readings.

How soon should I get in touch?

As early as you can is helpful, so we have time to meet and prepare, but I understand funerals come together quickly, and I will always do my best to help.

How much does a celebrant cost?

I charge a clear, flat fee that is agreed with you in advance and covers everything, from our meeting to writing your ceremony and leading it on the day. Please get in touch and I will talk you through it.

Here when you need me
