What happens when you contact a funeral celebrant?

If you've never arranged a funeral before, reaching out to a celebrant can feel like one more unknown at an already overwhelming time. So here's exactly what happens, step by gentle step. There's nothing to prepare, and nothing you can get wrong.

1. You get in touch. A call, an email or a message is enough, or your funeral director may put us in touch. You don't need to have anything worked out. I'll check I'm free for the date and explain what comes next.

2. We arrange a time to talk. Usually within a day or two, at home, by phone or video, whatever is easiest for you. There's no rush and no form to fill in.

3. We meet, and I listen. This is the heart of it. You tell me about the person you've lost, in whatever way you can manage: the stories, the quirks, the things that made them them. I ask gentle questions, and I do most of the listening. If it's emotional, that's completely alright.

4. I write the ceremony. From everything you've shared, I write the service: a tribute in their voice and your words, with the music, readings and moments you choose. You see a full draft and can change anything. Nothing goes in that you haven't approved.

5. I handle the practical side. I coordinate with your funeral director and the crematorium, church or venue, so the timings, music and order of the day are all taken care of.

6. The day itself. I arrive early, settle everyone, and lead the service calmly and warmly, so you and your family can simply be present.

That's the whole of it. My job is to take the weight of the ceremony off your shoulders, so you're free to grieve and to remember.

If you're arranging a funeral, or thinking ahead, you're welcome to talk to me or call 07380 747534. I answer every enquiry myself.

If you're grieving and would find it helpful to talk, your GP and organisations such as Cruse Bereavement Support can offer support.
